NEW ZEALAND ECONOMY GROWS 1.1 PERCENT IN SEPTEMBER QUARTER

(AP) — New Zealand's economy grew at a brisk rate of 1.1 percent in the September quarter as people spent more on traveling, eating out and recreation.
Figures released Thursday by government agency Statistics New Zealand show the economy grew at an annual rate of 3.5 percent when comparing the September quarter with the same period last year. One of the fastest growing industries was construction, which grew by more than 2 percent during the quarter.
The figures beat predictions by most economists and gave a boost to the nation's new conservative prime minister, Bill English. English took over the top job this month from John Key, who unexpectedly resigned, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family.
New Zealanders go to the polls for a general election next year.
Finance Minister Steven Joyce said in a statement that over the past few years, growth in tourism and education had offset a downturn in the market for the country's key dairy exports.
"New Zealand's focus on developing a strong and open economy is delivering good results for kiwi families, especially relative to most of the rest of the developed world," Joyce said.
New Zealand's currency was little changed on the news.

Donald Trump On Nuclear Weapons Tweets 'Let It Be An Arms Race': Report

US President-elect Donald Trump, asked to clarify his comments about expanding US nuclear weapons capability, said, "Let it be an arms race," and that the United States would win it, MSNBC reported on Friday.
Trump had alarmed non-proliferation experts on Thursday with a Twitter post that said the United States "must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes."
MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski spoke with Trump on the phone and asked him to expand on his tweet. She said he responded: "Let it be an arms race. We will outmatch them at every pass and outlast them all."

Shares of uranium producers and a nuclear fuel technology company have jumped on Trump's comments with Uranium Resources Inc, Uranium Energy Corp, Cameco Corp and Lightbridge Corp all trading higher on Friday.
It was not clear what prompted Thursday's tweet by Trump, a Republican who takes office on January 20, but it came the same day Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country needed to boost its nuclear forces.
In his year-end news conference in Moscow on Friday, Putin said Trump's comment on Wednesday was not out of line and that he did not consider the United States to be a potential aggressor.
Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said in several television interviews on Friday that there would not be an arms race because the president-elect would ensure that other countries trying to step up their nuclear capabilities, such as Russia and China, would decide not to do so.

"He's going to ensure that other countries get the message that he's not going to sit back and allow that," Spicer, who was named this week as White House spokesman for the president-elect, told NBC. "And what's going to happen is they will come to their senses, and we will all be just fine."

UN--United Nations-Syria-Crimes

(AP) — The U.N. General Assembly has voted to establish an investigative body that will assist in documenting and prosecuting the most serious violations of international law in Syria, including possible war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The 193-member world body adopted a resolution Wednesday by a vote of 105 to 15 with 52 abstentions over strenuous objections from Syria and close ally Russia who accused the assembly of interfering in the work of the Security Council.
The resolution stresses the need for the new body "to closely coordinate" with an independent commission appointed by the U.N. Human Rights Council which has said war crimes are "rampant" in Syria.
Syria's U.N. Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari said the resolution was illegal and "a direct threat to a solution" of the 5 1/2-year Syrian conflict.

Pakistan Senate Seeks Demonetisation Of Rs 5,000 Notes

The Pakistan Senate on Monday passed a resolution seeking withdrawal of high denomination Rs 5,000 currency notes in order to curb the flow of black money.
Senator Usman Saif Ullah Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League tabled the resolution that was endorsed by the majority of law makers in the upper house of Parliament.
The resolution said that the withdrawal of Rs 5,000 notes from circulation will encourage the use of bank accounts and reduce the size of the undocumented economy.
It said the withdrawal of the currency notes should take place within three to five years in order to purge markets of these notes.
Law Minister Zahid Hamid, however, said that the withdrawal of the notes will create crises in the market and the people will resort to foreign currencies in the absence of Rs 5,000 notes.
He said that currently 3.4 trillion notes were in circulation in country, and of these 1.02 trillion notes were of Rs 5,000 denomination.

HACKERS HIT THAI SITES TO PROTEST RESTRICTIVE INTERNET LAW

(AP) — Hackers saying they are protesting the passage of a bill restricting internet freedom have been attacking Thai government computer servers, temporarily disabling public access and reportedly copying restricted documents.
A Facebook group called for people to deny access to government sites by repeatedly reloading them, a simple version of a distributed denial of service, or DDoS, attack. The tactic apparently forced the Defense Ministry website to be temporarily offline Monday. Other reported targets included the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, the Prime Minister's Office and the Office of the National Security Council.
'blackplans,' a hacker identifying himself on Twitter as part of the informal activist network Anonymous, posted screenshots Friday of what he said were documents taken from government websites in protest.
The new law would allow Thailand authorities to intercept private communication and to censor websites without a court order.
"The bill is very broad and open to interpretation and we will have to see how the government will implement these laws," said Arthit Suriyawongkul of the Thai Netizen Network, which promotes online freedom.
A small public street protest occurred in Bangkok on Sunday.
The bill was approved by the military-appointed legislature in a unanimous vote last Friday despite significant opposition. Critics say the new legislation could be used to silence critics of the military regime, which overthrew a civilian government in 2014.
"This is cyber warfare, which means damages and losses are inevitable," said the Facebook group that urged Monday's attacks, Citizens Against Single Gateway. "This (internet bill) vote was like a coup against the online world and these are the counter measures against that coup."
Activists are also concerned about plans for a single gateway through which all international internet traffic would pass. The government claims such a system is necessary for national security, but opposition from many sectors has made the government evasive about whether it plans to implement a single gateway.
"We are concerned by amendments to Thai legislation that could threaten online freedoms, and call on the Government to ensure the country's cyber laws comply to international human rights standards," said the U.N. Office of Human Rights in a statement Monday.
Thailand's defense ministry said the DDoS attacks accomplished little.
"They couldn't do anything because we have defense systems in place that are ready for such situations," said Kongcheep Tantrawanich, a Defense Ministry spokesman. He warned against further attacks, saying that "destroying financial systems, banks, transportation systems, and airports, can cause damage toward the population of an entire country."
The government asked members of the public to submit photos and other information about the hackers, whom they called "thugs" who were "overstepping boundaries" and "creating chaos."
But the group posted that they can "manage under any circumstances" and told followers to keep up the attacks.

New Delhi, December 19: A Russian aircraft with 30 people on board crashed on Monday morning in Yakutia of Siberia. No casualties took place as reported by the Russian Defense Ministry.
Although BBC reported injuries to 16 people, no confirmation have came from the Russian ministry.
The plane crashed at 12:07 local time on Monday.

"The Il-18 plane, which flew from the Koltsovo airport in Yekaterinburg, on Monday, December 19, crashed 27 kilometers from the Tiksi village," a law enforcement source told Russian news agency Tass.
The fliers are being rescued and taken to a hospital in Tiski, a village near the crash site.
Around 100 servicemen and two military Mi-8 helicopters are involved in the rescue operations.

Donald Trump has no idea how to lead a Superpower, says Chinese state media

Beijing, December 19: Donald Trump does not know how to lead a superpower, Chinese state media is reported to have said on Monday morning, following the President-elect’s latest outburst on social media.
“Trump is not behaving as a president who will become master of the White House in a month,” an editorial in the state-backed Global Times newspaper read. “He bears no sense of how to lead a superpower.”
Chinese officials indicated there would be a "smooth" resolution of the diplomatic incident, but after the President elect's tweet, they accused Washington of "hyping up" the issue.

Relations between the two countries had been frayed by Trump's decision after his election victory to speak to the Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on the phone.
“But if he treats China after assuming office in the same way as in his tweets, China will not exercise restraint,” the newspaper warned. “The Chinese government should be fully prepared for a hardline Trump.”
"China should teach him some lessons so he might learn to respect China after he is sworn in."

Chennai Test: Nair's triple ton piles misery on England

Chennai, Dec 19 (CRICKETNMORE) Indian batsmen's love affair with the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here continued as middle-order batsman Karun Nair on Monday became only the second Indian after former opener Virender Sehwag to slam a triple ton here.
Nair's brilliant unbeaten 303 helped India declare their first innings at a mammoth 759/7 -- their highest against any opponent -- surpassing the previous best of 726/9 declared against Sri Lanka in 2009.
Meanwhile, England batted for five overs in their second essay to post 12/0 at stumps on the penultimate day of the fifth and final Test.
Read: Karun Nair second Indian to score 300 in Tests
For the visitors, skipper Alastair Cook (3) and Keaton Jennings (9) were at the crease when the umpires dislodged the bails for the day.
Playing only his third Test, the 25-year-old Nair forged two major partnerships -- 181 for the sixth wicket with Ravichandran Ashwin (67) and then 138 for the seventh wicket with Ravindra Jadeja (51) -- to give the hosts a 282-run first inings lead.
The right-hander reached the landmark in the 191st over of India's first innings off 381 balls -- his run-spree was laced with 32 boundaries and four sixes.
Nair reached the milestone off the bowling of leg-spinner Adil Rashid when a misfield at point resulted in a boundary that brought up his triple-hundred, thereby helping Nair become the first Indian to turn his maiden hundred into a triple.
Nair became the third highest individual scorer by an Indian in Tests, after Sehwag, who heads the top scorer's list with two triple-tons.
Sehwag scored 319 against South Africa here in Chennai in March 2008 and 309 vs Pakistan in March-April 2004 at Multan in Pakistan.
Resuming from his overnight score of 71, Nair looked in good control to score his maiden Test hundred in the morning session with a boundary off Ben Stokes behind point.
He then carried on to go past the 150-run mark in 240 balls and with Ashwin forged a 147-run unbeaten stand for the sixth wicket going into the tea break.
Coming back from the break, Ashwin became pacer Stuart Broad's second victim of the innings but by then the local boy had added 181 runs with Nair.
Nair was then joined by all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who was at his aggressive best, sending the English bowlers to the leather-hunt at will.
This gave the Rajasthan-born Nair the liberty to score freely as he went on to score his double century off 306 balls after the tea session and continued frustrating the English bowlers before surviving a stumping chance four runs short of his 250.
Meanwhile, Jadeja smashed almost a run-a-ball 51 to provide the much-needed acceleration towards the end as he paired with Nair to amass 138 runs for the seventh wicket.
Immediately after crossing the 250-run mark, Nair went on the rampage, slamming five fours and two sixes to score the remaining 53 runs in just 33 deliveries as skipper Virat Kohli signalled the declaration of the innings.
After the declaration, the Karnataka batsman walked off the field to delirious applause. England players also shook hand with him, acknowledging the enormity of his feat.
With the feat, Nair also became the third on the highest maiden hundred in Tests after the West Indies' Gary Sobers (365 not out) against Pakistan in 1958 and Australia's Bob Simpson (311) vs England in 1964.
Nair's feat also overshadowed the contribution of opener Lokesh Rahul (199), who forged a 152-run opening stand with senior wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel (71) to set the tone for India's massive total.
For England, none of the bowlers looked threatening as pacer Stuart Broad and debutant left-arm-spinner Liam Dawson took two wickets each while Moeen Ali, Ben Stokes and Adil Rashid chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Three soldiers martyred as militants open fire at Army convoy in Kashmir’s Pulwama

Three Indian Army soldiers were today martyred when terrorists opened fire at an Army convoy on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway in the Pampore town of Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district.

No casualties have been reported so far, police said, adding that the ultras opened fire on the army convoy at Kadlabal in Pampore town of Pulwama.
Security forces have cordoned off the adjoining residential area and launched search operation to track down the militants, police said.

“There was some retaliatory firing as well, but so far no casualties have been reported," a police official said.

Paid in full with one glass of milk

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his
way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry.

He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house.

However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.
Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water.

She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large
glass of milk He drank it slowly, and then asked,  "How much do I owe you?"
"You don't owe me anything," she replied "Mother has taught us never to
accept payment for a kindness."
He said...  "Then I thank you from my heart."

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt; stronger physically,
but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Years later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors
were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare

disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation.

When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled
his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her
room. Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her.

He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation
room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave
special attention to the case.
After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the
business office to pass the final bill to him for approval.

He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent
to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for
it all. Finally, she looked, and something caught her attention on the side as she read these
words......
"Paid in full with one glass of milk."
 (Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly.

Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed: "Thank You,
GOD, that Your love has spread abroad through human hearts and hands."
